Giza & Cairo, Egypt
Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum with lunch
The plateau at opening time while it is cool and quiet, then Tutankhamun galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum. One long, very good day with a licensed Egyptologist.
Trip highlights
- On the plateau close to opening, before the heat and the crowds
- The Great Pyramid, Khafre, Menkaure and the panoramic nine-pyramid viewpoint
- The Sphinx and the Valley Temple of Khafre
- The complete Tutankhamun collection at the Grand Egyptian Museum
- A licensed Egyptologist, not a driver with a leaflet
About this tour
This is the day almost everyone comes to Egypt for, run in the order that actually works. We collect you early — early enough that you are on the Giza plateau close to opening, when the air is still cool, the light is low and the coaches have not arrived. That first ninety minutes is worth more than the rest of the day put together.
You will stand at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, walk across to Khafre with its cap of original casing stone, and drive up to the panoramic point where all nine pyramids line up in a single view. Then down to the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, where the granite blocks still carry the marks of the tools that shaped them.
After lunch we cross to the Grand Egyptian Museum on the edge of the same plateau. It opened fully in November 2025 and now holds the complete Tutankhamun collection — more than five thousand objects, together, for the first time since they left the tomb. Your guide takes you through the Grand Staircase and the main galleries rather than leaving you to find your own way around a building of this size.
You will be tired by the end. You will also have seen the two things in Egypt that nothing prepares you for.
How the day runs
-
1Step
Early pick-up
We collect you from your hotel early enough to reach the plateau near opening. The traffic you avoid by leaving now is the traffic that would otherwise cost you the coolest part of the day.
-
2Step
The Giza plateau
The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre with its surviving casing stones, and Menkaure. Time at the panoramic viewpoint for the photograph with all nine pyramids in frame.
-
3Step
The Sphinx and the Valley Temple
Down to the Sphinx, carved from the bedrock of the quarry that supplied the blocks above it, and through the Valley Temple of Khafre with its enormous granite casing.
-
4Step
Lunch
A proper sit-down meal at a local restaurant is time off your feet before the second half of the day.
-
5Step
Grand Egyptian Museum
The Grand Staircase, the main galleries, and the Tutankhamun collection in full. Three to four hours is the minimum to do it justice, and your guide will shape the route around what interests you.
-
6Step

Questions about this tour
Yes, on a separate ticket, bought at the plateau on the day. It is a steep, bent-double climb into a bare chamber, an experience rather than a sight. Tell your guide in the morning, and they will arrange it. Plenty of people skip it and miss nothing visual.
It is a full, honest day, and it works, but the museum deserves more than one afternoon. If your schedule allows, we would rather split this into two half-days. Let us know, and we will rebuild it.
A fair amount of walking on sand and uneven stone at the plateau, and then several kilometers of gallery floor at the museum. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything else you bring. Please tell us if anyone in the group has limited mobility, and we will adjust the route and the vehicle access.
Early — usually between 7 and 8 a.m., depending on where you are staying and the season. That is deliberate. The plateau at opening and the plateau at eleven o'clock are two different places.
