- Places chosen because they are good, not because they pay commission
- A guide who can tell you what everything is before you eat it
About this tour
Cairo is a night city. The heat goes, the streets fill, and the food comes out.
We walk. Koshari from a place that has made nothing else for decades: lentils, rice, pasta, fried onion, and a vinegar-and-chili sauce that is the whole point. Taameya, which is the Egyptian broad-bean ancestor of falafel and better than the chickpea version, hot out of the pan. Fresh sugarcane juice pressed in front of you. Hawawshi, if you still have room, which you probably will not.
In between, we walk Downtown, laid out in the 1860s to look like Paris and now gloriously worn wrought-iron balconies, old cinemas, cafés where the same men have argued at the same tables for forty years. We stop at one for mint tea and, if you want it, shisha.
You will eat too much. That is the intended outcome.
