Questions about Siwa Oasis
By road, and only by road — there is no airport and no train. It is around ten hours from Cairo, or roughly eight from Alexandria, which is why we usually break the journey with a night on the coast rather than driving it in one go. The last stretch across open desert is part of the experience; it is also why we send a good vehicle and a driver who knows the route.
Three days is the minimum that justifies the drive, and four is better. That gives you the town and Shali fortress, the Oracle of Amun and the Mountain of the Dead, an afternoon at the springs and the salt lakes, and a full desert trip into the Great Sand Sea with sandboarding and a sunset. Two days means spending more time in the car than in the oasis.
Yes — the salinity is high enough that you bob without effort, much like the Dead Sea. The water is startlingly clear and turquoise. Two practical warnings: the salt crystals around the edges are sharp, so bring something on your feet, and do not go in with fresh cuts or shave beforehand. Rinse off afterwards at one of the freshwater springs.
October to April. Summer in the Western Desert is genuinely extreme and there is nothing gained by trying it. Winter days are warm and clear; winter nights, especially out in the sand sea, get cold enough that you will want a proper layer.
Simple and characterful rather than luxurious — mud-brick lodges, palm gardens, a handful of eco-lodges built without electricity where the lighting is candles and the point is the silence. If you need air conditioning and a lift, Siwa is not that kind of place. Tell us which end of that scale you want and we will be honest about what exists.
Partly. The springs, the salt lakes and the drives are fine. Shali fortress and the Mountain of the Dead involve uneven steps and loose ground, and the desert trip means getting in and out of a 4x4 on sand.
